The Strategic Planning Task Force is off to a fast start and moving forward to gather information both externally and internally to the college. As part of the internal process, there will be a series of SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) sessions that will last 90 minutes to receive input from all sectors of the college. All members of the campus community (students, faculty, classified staff and administrative exempt employees) are strongly encouraged to attend one of the sessions listed below. This is your chance to make a difference!
At these meetings, Tom Mesaros from the Alford Group will facilitate the discussion regarding the college’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in both large group and small group formats. The atmosphere will be informal, lively and collaborative.
Here are some sample questions that may be asked:
- What are college’s primary strengths in academics, scheduling, facilities, human resources, decision making, processes, student services, finances, etc.?
- What are college’s primary weaknesses in academics, scheduling, facilities, human resources, decision making, processes, student services, finances, etc.?
- What are the college’s key opportunities in academics, scheduling, facilities human resources, decision making, processes, student services, finances, etc.?
- What are the primary threats to the college?
SWOT sessions have already occurred on April 8 and April 10. Here are the dates and times for the remaining SWOT sessions:

On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, the 2nd Annual EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS KIT DAY will take place in the main lobby of the PUB, Building 9000. The event occurs from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and is open to everyone.
Back by popular demand, the event supports the idea that we hope we will never have to use the kit, but a number of things could happen in our daily lives that could cause us to need an emergency kit.
Stop by to learn how to better prepare yourself for an emergency incident at work, home, and on the road. See the many ideas and options available for pre-made kits, do it yourself lists, and emergency food and water storage preparation. Take the short, fun quiz to test your knowledge on emergency readiness on campus.
We are excited to announce we will be drawing the name of the employee who attended Winter Quarter’s “Get Ready Take Action” Training and entered the drawing for a new Grab ‘n Go Emergency Kit. The kit is self-contained in a backpack with a 3 day supply of emergency products.

The Student Leadership Center, in collaboration with RESULTS and the Global Affairs Center, is holding a workshop Wed., April 22 from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) that equips students with some powerful advocacy and civic engagement tools. These can be applied to securing WA state funding for higher education, environmental protection, and poverty reduction here and abroad.

Shoreline Community College Unified Soccer is playing at Seattle University this Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Special Olympics College Unified Soccer Invitational. Our first game is at 11:30 a.m. and the Invitational events run from 7:45 am to 7:00 pm.
Special Olympics has a wonderful program dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences. It’s called Unified Sports, and it joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
While Unified Sports has been operating at the high school level for five years, this marks the first year of collegiate-level play. Sixteen colleges are participating in Saturday’s tournament, including fifteen from the state of Washington and one from Oregon. Participating Washington state colleges include, but are not limited to, Gonzaga, University of Washington, Western Washington University, Walla Walla Community College, Pacific Lutheran University and Shoreline.
In Unified Sports, having a sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away. Shoreline Community College is proud to be a part of an amazing coalition of students and colleges from all over the region, as well as respected guests and the Seahawks marching band!
Who are the players on SCC’s Unified Soccer team? Student athletes from the SCC Varsity Soccer team, Melissa and Autumn, students from Shoreline CC Erik and Mikhail, student volunteer coaches, SamSam and Thuy, students from the Shoreline School District, Mackenzie, and former SCC student Sean. They will take part in a day-long soccer invitational tournament at Seattle University on April 18. Come out and cheer for your school at 11:30 a.m. on soccer field #3. Be a part of a movement! Earth Week is April 19-25, and Shoreline Community College is celebrating with an exciting lineup of events surrounding the theme “Fostering an Ethic of Place.”
This year’s Earth Week seeks to explore our relationship with the place that Shoreline calls home by opening our eyes to the history of our campus, examining our roles in this community and envisioning what we can do in the future to create a more equitable, economical and environmentally just community, with the end goal of reaching sustainability.
Earth Week activities kick off this Sun., April 19 with Earth Day Storytelling at Duwamish Longhouse featuring native storytellers Gene Tagaban, Mary Anne Moorman and Lorraine Bayes and will end next Sat., April 25 with a Habitat Restoration work party in the Upper Boeing Creek Watershed.
In between, the Shoreline community is invited to attend a whole host of events ranging from Amp Your Voice (a workshop that equips students with powerful advocacy and civic engagement tools) to nature walks, from a native plant sale to film showings including Wall-E, Soylent Green and Princess Angeline.

You can’t get through college without taking tests, yet no one prepares you for the best way to take them. The Writing and Learning Studio is here to help!
Join us Friday, April 17 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in room 1501 for our FREE workshop “Preparing for and Taking Tests.” This one-hour workshop will teach you how to critically read and answer multiple choice, true-false, matching and sentence-completion questions on tests.

Join us this Friday, April 17 in the FOSS (5000) bldg., room 5116 from 1-2:30 p.m. for a Job Seekers’ Rountable exploring how to make new contacts without networking.
Various tests abound on the internet that can place us into extrovert/introvert-based categories. Maybe you’ve taken a Myers Briggs or one of the many others.
Some of us are quite social and fun, we just need to be more selective. Others can chat at a party just fine, but aren’t too big on small talk.
And there are still some of us who get waves of anxiety at the mere thought of networking, which sounds to us like meaningless glad handing, with all involved pretending there are no personal agendas. Some of us don’t want to show for networking events for risk of being rejected, or feeling like we don’t have anything new or interesting to say.
What if you could make connections for volunteering or learning about job opportunities, in person, and without all the “salesy” job search baggage?
This Friday, Ron Carnell will lead the discussion about how to make new contacts without the assumptions or pressures of an agenda. We’ll share resources about how to get connected more casually. All this over the usual great coffee and treats, compliments of Central Market.

Police have been alerted to a series of defacings of posters for the Muslim Student Association on the Shoreline Community College campus.
Safety and Security Director Robin Blacksmith said a faculty member reported April 6, 2015, seeing one of the club posters with a phrase referencing violence in the Middle East written across the poster. In removing the poster and while checking the rest of the campus, security personnel found three more club posters defaced in a similar manner.
Then, on April 13, six more defaced posters were found by security personnel. The Muslim Student Association is one of the many on-campus club organizations recognized and supported by the Student Body Association.
The college has reported the incidents to Shoreline Police who said they are aware of similar incidents off campus and not involving the student club. College officials said the handwriting on all the defaced posters appears to be the same, perhaps indicating it is the work of one person.
This past fall, the college launched an ongoing collaborative process to establish a campus community standard around respect and support. Progress from that effort will soon be available for college-wide review and input, says Shoreline Community College President Cheryl Roberts.
“It is a core value of Shoreline that everyone who comes to this campus feels respected and supported,” Roberts said. “When one of us is diminished, we are all diminished.”
During fall quarter, separate incidents of intolerance by defacing posters for the Project Pride and Muslim Student Association clubs brought swift responses from President Roberts, who called together employees and students to discuss potential courses of action. Out of those discussions has come an effort to create and implement a community standard regarding intolerance.
“We’re working on three areas,” Roberts said. “First, defining a response; second, creating a policy around the values of inclusiveness and dignity for all and statement or motto to reflect that policy, and then third, how to infuse those values in the campus culture.”
A group of college employees and students have been meeting and working on those three areas. The group anticipates coming to the campus for a larger conversation during spring quarter, said Roberts, who has been closely involved in the effort.
“As a college, we respect each individual. This value speaks to the character of our college and gets to the heart of who we are,” Roberts said. “Shoreline is committed to equity, inclusion and respect for the rights of all persons.”
Roberts urged the campus community to reflect the value of respect for all persons. “If you see hate, say something; report it,” Roberts said. Reporting options include:

We need your clean recyclables!
Next week’s Earth Week activity “Making recycled art” will run all week long and encourage participants to make art out of recyclables. To make this event a success, we’re asking you to help us collect enough “art supplies” by donating your clean recyclables to be turned into someone else’s masterpiece. You can help all this week and next, by bringing your clean recyclables from home to the PUB 1st Floor, Room 9102. There should be a bin set up inside that room to collect the recyclables – if the bin is full, please tuck them in the back corner fairly out of the way.
We need CLEAN plastics, bottles, jars, cardboard, etc. – anything recyclable will do.

A report of harassment has prompted Shoreline Community College officials to urge caution when students consider using non-college services that are posted on campus.
The alert comes after a report was filed with the campus Safety and Security office by a female student in relation to private, off-campus tutoring services. During winter quarter, according to the report, the student responded to a flyer offering writing help. After making an appointment, the student met a man at a Shoreline-area coffee shop regarding the tutoring service. The two didn’t meet again, according to the report, but subsequent e-mail messages became increasingly sexually inappropriate.
“This is very serious,” said Director of Safety and Security Robin Blacksmith. “Our security officer asked the student if she wanted us to call Shoreline Police to campus to speak with her. The student indicated she would go to police on her own.”
Dean of Students Kim Thompson said that while there is a review and approval process for posting flyers and other information on campus bulletin boards, students should always verify that what is posted is college-approved and report postings that aren’t stamped as approved.
Thompson said that a check of campus bulletin boards did not find any of the flyers related to this incident. She said the college is reviewing the flyer approval process.
“Our goal is to make this campus a safe place for students, employees and the community. We’re thankful that this student came forward so that this incident can be addressed,” Thompson said. “We have the Shoreline Threat Assessment Team (STAT) in place to help respond to incidents like this and others. We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for all.”
