All students are welcome to enter the International Education Week (IEW) 2018 – Photo Contest. The theme this year is “Growing.”
• The deadline for submissions is Nov. 7 by 11:59 PM. Please email no more than three photos (with a caption for each) to iwelcome@shoreline.edu using the subject line “IEW Photo Contest.”
• Top 10 entries will be selected by a panel of faculty & staff judges and displayed in the PUB Nov. 13-14. Voting for a winner will happen at IEW events and in the International Education office in PUB 9302.
• Winners will be announced at the IEW event on Nov. 15 in PUB Lobby.

There’s a new exhibit in the Admin (1000 Bldg) Art Gallery:
SOS for Lake Pátzcuaro
The Lily Project / Proyecto DeLirio
October 1, 2018 – January 11, 2019
This exhibition combines cultural preservation, environmental activism and community collaboration through the processes of paper making and printmaking to share the story and inspiration of Taller DeLirio.
Near Lake Patzcuaro in the small town of Huecorio, Mexico, artist Esteban Silva and his wife Tania Dominguez are working to bring attention to the slow destruction of the lake by an invasive water plant, the water hyacinth. Esteban and Tania responded to this environmental crisis by removing and making paper from the hyacinth. They use this paper to promote awareness and community involvement through their studio, Taller DeLirio.
In 2016, Taller DeLirio invited painters and engravers to participate in a poster project “SOS for Lake Patzcuaro” and the result was surprising. They ended with a collection of 64 posters by 32 local artists, addressing the environmental and social themes of the lake environment. The paper and graphic project was carried out in conjunction with their group of paper workers at Taller DeLirio and the invited artists.

The Queer I Am Conference (QIA) is an annual event hosted by the Multicultural Student Services Directors’ Council (MSSDC). It focuses on creating a liberating and welcoming space for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) students.
This year it will be held at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Oct. 26-27. Shoreline’s Multicultural Center will be sending a group of students for free, but space is limited so sign up early if you’re interested. This opportunity is open to all current and enrolled students. Shoreline Community College Theater presents the world premiere of Off We Fly Now, which will be performed as a mixed media experience in collaboration with Shoreline’s Visual Communications Program to combine live action with animation.
Snow White, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty, have found a way to escape from their centuries-old fairy tales. Arriving in the “real world,” they quickly attract the attention of the media and the public. As the four attempt to discover the meaning of life, they end up becoming reality show celebrities. Then they begin to realize that the real world, similar to the fairy tale world, is full of tricks and traps. Fame, love, youth, and marriage are each unsolved riddles.
Off We Fly Now challenges the boundaries between fairy tales and the truth. Perhaps, after all, the tales were written to prepare us for life in the real world.

Shoreline Dental Hygiene faculty and students began a tradition in 2011 of providing practical work support at the first and only dental hygiene school in Cochabamba, Bolivia. They learned many things, including how simple healthcare practices can make a difference in impoverished communities. 2018 will be the fourth year of offering this service-learning opportunity to Shoreline students and other students in other colleges.

Drop in and help out at the Deep Roots Community Garden located next to the 2400 building. Come for the whole hour or only 15 minutes. It will feel good to do some tending, weeding, planting, and growing. Volunteers check in at the Greenhouse. Gloves and tools provided.

Free one-hr workshop on the basics of how to make compost! Topics include different methodologies for making compost and different ways to make a compost bin in your home or apartment.
A service learning or volunteer opportunity to make compost for the community garden in compost tumblers is available.

Multicultural Week: Cultivating Healthy Sexual Relationships: PUB 9202
Mon., May 14: 10:30-11:30am
Lifelong will join us to talk about safe sex practices that include topics such as HIV care, negotiating and giving consent when practicing sex, how to have safe sex in a relationship, and setting boundaries.
Students will engage in activities, be able to interact with the presenters, and write down questions anonymously.
College Rep Visit: Table in PUB Lobby
Mon., May 14: 11am-1pm
Representatives from University of Washington: Health Professions will be at Shoreline’s campus to meet with interested students. Reps will discuss topics such as academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures for their college. They can answer other questions students may have too.

Led by Shoreline faculty Brooke Zimmers & Leslie Potter Henderson. In this interactive workshop, learn listening skills for centering the non-dominant. We will explore dialogue and perspective talking as strategies for dismantling the effects of exclusion.
Multicultural Week: Using Liberation Theater Techniques to Explore Forms of Resistance and Oppression: PUB 9208

This workshop is structured to introduce concepts and techniques from the Theater of the Oppressed repertoire so the participants can begin to apply them as tools in a practice of personal and collective liberation.
Participants will be taught how to observe, analyze, interrupt, and transform acts of oppression at an individual, interpersonal, and institutional level using a curriculum that incorporates a spectrum of games, exercises, and specific techniques.

Multicultural Week: Breaking Boundaries with Poetry with Da’Sund F. Heller: PUB 9202

Develop your creative expression through poetry. We will use writing prompts and exercises to lead into a discussion about community.
This workshop will be facilitated by current SCC student Da’Sund F. Heller. Da’Sund is a Seattle YouthSpeaks Poet who has qualified in both Rain City and YouthSpeaks Grand Slams.
Multicultural Week: Cece McDonald: PUB 9208

Cece McDonald is an activist from Minneapolis, Minnesota. McDonald gained international attention in 2012 when she was charged with second-degree manslaughter. A trans woman, she spent 19 months in a men’s prison for defending herself after being assaulted. Her case galvanized national outrage and communities protested the transphobia, racism, and violence perpetrated against trans women of color.
In 2016, actress Laverne Cox produced and released Free CeCe: a documentary that follows McDonald over a period of three years, from her incarceration in 2012 to her release and the aftermath in 2014-2015.

Multicultural Week: Shoreline Brothers of Color with MJ Washington: PUB 9202

Stop by and speak on the issues we face as men of color here on campus and in our everyday lives. This meeting is a small space where we agree to speak in a space free from judgment, where everything we say stays in the room and what we learn we can take out into the world. We will play a short video clip from the Mask You Live In, a documentary that follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity.
Multicultural Week: Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) Field-Trip: off-site

Join us as we visit NAAM. Several exhibits are available to enjoy such as; Everyday Black, which features contemporary portraits by photographers Jessica Rycheal and Zorn B. Taylor as they explore the intersections and identities that are held within Blackness; and Seattle chapter Black Panther Party: Power to the People recognizes its beginning 50 years ago.

Tech is currently saturated with cis hetero white men, and people who identify otherwise face unique challenges and situations. Come hear stories, tips, and advice from experienced voices working in Tech.

Shoreline Community College Musical Theater program is proud to present Stephen Sondheim’s Company – coming to the Campus Theater in May 2018. From musical theatre’s most renowned composer and the winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics, and Best Book, Company is regarded as a trailblazer of the dark-comedy, modern-musical genre.
Set in New York, Company follows five married, once married, or soon to be married couples and their mutual friend, Robert, a 35-year-old bachelor who has been unable to establish a long-term relationship. The couples are presented in a series of vignettes, primarily through Bobby’s eyes, so that we see the less than ideal aspects of commitment. However, can it be that the committed are happy? Bobby learns that relationships aren’t perfect, but are they a necessary part of *Being Alive*?
Featuring a brilliant, brisk, and energetic score containing many of Sondheim’s best-known songs, Company will have audience members seeing reflections of themselves in the relationships on stage.
