Students of Color Conference is a transformative educational experience with over 800 students from community colleges across the state participating every year. Workshop topics include: leadership development; ethnic, racial, and cultural sensitivity; academic success; identity development; diversity and multiculturalism; strategies and skills for promoting social justice; intercultural communication.

The Queer I Am Conference (QIA) is an annual event hosted by the Multicultural Student Services Directors’ Council (MSSDC). It focuses on creating a liberating and welcoming space for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) students.

This year it will be held at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Oct. 26-27. Shoreline’s Multicultural Center will be sending a group of students for free, but space is limited so sign up early if you’re interested. This opportunity is open to all current and enrolled students. Off We Fly Now: Campus Theater, 1600 Bldg

Shoreline Community College Theater presents the world premiere of Off We Fly Now, which will be performed as a mixed media experience in collaboration with Shoreline’s Visual Communications Program to combine live action with animation.

Snow White, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty, have found a way to escape from their centuries-old fairy tales. Arriving in the “real world,” they quickly attract the attention of the media and the public. As the four attempt to discover the meaning of life, they end up becoming reality show celebrities. Then they begin to realize that the real world, similar to the fairy tale world, is full of tricks and traps. Fame, love, youth, and marriage are each unsolved riddles.

Off We Fly Now challenges the boundaries between fairy tales and the truth. Perhaps, after all, the tales were written to prepare us for life in the real world.

An exciting list of repertoire accompanies the program “Kaleidoscope” presented by Shoreline Community Colleges’ Chamber Chorale and Shoreline Singers directed by Evan Norberg. With works by Antonio Vivaldi, John Gardner, Dave Barduhn, Vijay Singh, Keith Hampton, Take 6, Northwest’s own Morten Lauridsen, and more, the concert is a blend of many styles rolled and toppled to create one amazing program!

Instrumental music students working with private instructors will perform a solo piece in front of a jury of Music Faculty as their final exam. Students hope to receive an Outstanding Performance acknowledgement or an Honorary Performance acknowledgement. Outstanding Performance students will later perform their winning piece at an Honors Recital. Everyone is invited to attend. Admission is free.

Multicultural Center End-of-Quarter Potluck: Off-campus at Greenlake Park

Multicultural Center’s End-of-the-Quarter potluck recognizes student achievements within the recognized student organizations (RSO) clubs on Shoreline Community College’s campus. The audience at jury examinations is often comprised of music faculty, friends and family members of the performers, fellow vocal students, and members of the community. This vocal concert is the final performance of the quarter for students enrolled in Voice Classes. The students choose their own solo piece to perform and there will also be small vocal ensembles performing. Students have been working hard to develop their stage presence as well as their vocal skills. The music selections for this recital range from present day composers to Early Baroque pieces.

Performers are always energized by appearing in front of an audience, so we hope to fill the room with supportive faces! Everyone is welcome to attend!

The film explores the journey into adulthood of Chiron, a young Black man growing up in Miami, as he navigates his sexuality, identity, and masculinity. Moonlight became the first film with an all-Black cast, and the first LGBTQ film to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Shoreline Dental Hygiene faculty and students began a tradition in 2011 of providing practical work support at the first and only dental hygiene school in Cochabamba, Bolivia. They learned many things, including how simple healthcare practices can make a difference in impoverished communities. 2018 will be the fourth year of offering this service-learning opportunity to Shoreline students and other students in other colleges.

Multicultural Week: Using Liberation Theater Techniques to Explore Forms of Resistance and Oppression: PUB 9208

This workshop is structured to introduce concepts and techniques from the Theater of the Oppressed repertoire so the participants can begin to apply them as tools in a practice of personal and collective liberation.

Participants will be taught how to observe, analyze, interrupt, and transform acts of oppression at an individual, interpersonal, and institutional level using a curriculum that incorporates a spectrum of games, exercises, and specific techniques.

Multicultural Week: Cece McDonald: PUB 9208

Cece McDonald is an activist from Minneapolis, Minnesota. McDonald gained international attention in 2012 when she was charged with second-degree manslaughter. A trans woman, she spent 19 months in a men’s prison for defending herself after being assaulted. Her case galvanized national outrage and communities protested the transphobia, racism, and violence perpetrated against trans women of color.

In 2016, actress Laverne Cox produced and released Free CeCe: a documentary that follows McDonald over a period of three years, from her incarceration in 2012 to her release and the aftermath in 2014-2015.

This meeting is a small space where we agree to speak in a space free from judgment, where everything we say stays in the room and what we learn we can take out into the world. We will play a short video clip from the Mask You Live In, a documentary that follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity.

Set in New York, Company follows five married, once married, or soon to be married couples and their mutual friend, Robert, a 35-year-old bachelor who has been unable to establish a long-term relationship. The couples are presented in a series of vignettes, primarily through Bobby’s eyes, so that we see the less than ideal aspects of commitment. However, can it be that the committed are happy? Bobby learns that relationships aren’t perfect, but are they a necessary part of *Being Alive*?

Featuring a brilliant, brisk, and energetic score containing many of Sondheim’s best-known songs, Company will have audience members seeing reflections of themselves in the relationships on stage.

The Faculty Senate Council presents the lecture: When ‘Free Speech’ Is Actually Its Opposite. Shon Meckfessel, English professor at Highline College, will give a talk on the limits, perils, and contradictions of “free speech” discourse, especially in light of how alt-right groups have used First Amendment Rights against universities in order to call into question the values of inclusion, diversity, and anti-discrimination.

This event emerges from the need expressed by faculty, staff, administrators, and students to gain a more critical understanding of “free speech,” to learn more about the boundaries of what “free speech” means, and to take a critical stance against white supremacist actions within and across college campuses.
