Student Life’s From Margin To Center Presents: Jessyca Rycheal, an interdisciplinary visual storyteller and art director based in Seattle. Rycheal received a BFA in Graphic Design from Georgia Southern University and has worked for global brands like Gatorade, Under Armour, and Amazon. She uses a fluid approach to strategic design and photography that centers people and tells a story.
Rycheal’s current work, Everyday Black, features contemporary portraits that explore the depth of blackness in a predominantly white city. Everyday Black is currently on view at the Northwest African American Museum.
Nuclear Power: Risks of Waste Disposal & Spread of Radiation from Accidents: PUB 9208

Speakers: Dr. James Conca, Senior Scientist at UFA Ventures, Inc., Richland, Washington and Reid Tanaka, Senior Consultant, Areion LLC, Renton, Washington (U.S. Navy, retired).
Even if one accepts that nuclear is a cleaner energy alternative than coal or oil, there are still troubling questions of how to safely dispose of nuclear material and how to respond to accidents.
Dr. Conca and Reid Tanaka have first-hand experience dealing with the clean-up at the Hanford site here in WA state and with the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan in 2011.

Drop in and help out at the Deep Roots Community Garden located next to the 2600 building. Come for the whole hour or only 15 minutes. It will feel good to do some tending, weeding, planting, and growing. Volunteers check in at the Greenhouse. Gloves and tools provided.

Taiwan Indigenous Cultures: PUB 9208

Speaker: Mayumi Steinmetz, Faculty (Japanese Language and Asian Studies), Shoreline Community College.
Taiwan has been home to Austronasian-speaking indigenous peoples for thousands of years. In the 19th century, these 16 tribes lost their sovereignty and now live under the shadow of the dominant culture. Professor Steinmetz will discuss her recent research in Taiwan about of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan. She found them to be resilient and unified, with a strong ethnic identity, rooted in part in Christianity.
Converging Landscapes Artist Reception: Admin (1000) Bldg art gallery (lobby)

Meet Nicholas Enevoldsen and Gary Georger, the faculty artists behind Converging Landscapes, the current exhibit in the Admin Bldg art gallery.
Nicholas Enevoldsen’s recent series of perceptual oil paintings entitled, “The Modern Spectacle”, utilizes a broad sampling of disparate images—candid scenes drawn from everyday life—to curate a panoramic tapestry of the modern experience.
Educated as a painter and trained as a potter, Gary Georger is in the endeavor of surface textures and painting with clay. He creates large platters and chargers with exploratory techniques that are technical challenging. In the course of making these forms new possibilities and surfaces develop.

Dr. Dan Amrhein is a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Ocean Sciences and Department of Atmospheric Sciences at UW. He is working to understand how ancient climates over the last millennium and during the last ice age were different from today’s, and what that tells us about future climate change.
This Q&A presentation will be followed by a free documentary screening of Chasing Coral.

Please attend this special event and support our talented students as we celebrate their musical achievements.

Earth Week: Native Plant Habitat Restoration planting: Forested area on north campus

Come celebrate Earth Day by removing invasive species, cleaning up litter, and planting native trees and shrubs. Everyone is welcome. Some refreshments will be provided.
We’ll be working in the forested area between the track and Shoreline City Dog Park. Meet near the gate to the track in the parking lot.

Part of the Queer Film Series, Pinkwashing Exposed is a one-hour documentary about queer and trans activists in Seattle fighting against pinkwashing. “Pinkwashing” is a term activists coined to describe the practice of a country and/or company presenting itself as gay-friendly and progressive, in order to conceal their human rights violations.

Prison Industrial Complex: PUB 9208

From Margin To Center presents this talk that will explore the foundational issues of the prison industrial complex and its far-reaching tentacles in our inner-cities, schools, and overall impact on our communities. A focus will be placed on how our prisons and policing continue to hyper-racialize communities of color.
Professor Edwin Lindo is a faculty member at University of Washington School of Law, teaching Race and the Law and Latinx Critical Race Theory. He is a co-founder of UW’s School of Law Justice Lab – a space focused on bringing ideas of innovative justice to the consciousness of our communities. Lindo also guided the policy work for the Seattle Peoples Party.

Nicholas Enevoldsen’s recent series of perceptual oil paintings entitled, “The Modern Spectacle”, utilizes a broad sampling of disparate images—candid scenes drawn from everyday life—to curate a panoramic tapestry of the modern experience. Adorning this vast cross-section of contemporary life is a sea change of anonymous urban spaces whose exact locations are both seemingly familiar yet conspicuously elusive.
Educated as a painter and trained as a potter, Gary Georger is in the endeavor of surface textures and painting with clay. He creates large platters and chargers with exploratory techniques that are technical challenging. In the course of making these forms new possibilities and surfaces develop. The process is the catalyst; it excites or instigates Gary to contemplate the surface. Following the potentials he leads the exploration to create representational and abstractions of landscapes, forms and figures on the functional wares.

A Critical Comparison Of The United States and South Africa: PUB 9208

South Africa lies at the southern-most point of the African continent and borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Dr. Johnson will lead a four-week Study Abroad program in the summer of 2018 as part of a comparative analysis of movements towards multicultural societies in the United States and South Africa.

Our campus community is invited to participate in this training that explores gender identities in addition to the language and framework used to critically understand levels of oppression that impact transgender and gender non-conforming people. This training will be facilitated by Ebo Barton who is the Program Manager of Ingersoll Gender Center.
Ingersoll Gender Center is an organization of, by, and for transgender and gender diverse people that provides mutual support through peer-led support groups, advocacy in navigating resources, community organizing, and education — all in the pursuit of collective self-determination.
Jazz Ensemble Concert: Jazz Pathways: Nathan Hale High School

Jazz Pathways is a collaborative concert featuring performances by Jane Addams Middle School Jazz Band, Nathan Hall High School Jazz Band, and Shoreline Community College Jazz Ensemble. The concert will commence at 7:00 p.m. in the Performance Arts Center at Nathan Hale High School, 10750 30th Ave. N.E., Seattle, WA. 98125. Each group will have 30 minutes stage time. There will be a short intermission after Jane Addams Middle School Jazz Band and Nathan Hale’s performance. Shoreline Community College’s Jazz Ensemble will close the concert.

The tragic story of Matthew Shepard made national headlines in 1998. This 21-year-old gay college student was beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming. Two men were arrested and charged with kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and attempted first-degree murder for the hate crime. One month later, emotions still raw, director Moisés Kaufman and his team began conducting hundreds of interviews with the people of Laramie. From those interviews came The Laramie Project, a brutally honest and thought-provoking “live documentary” about an outraged nation and a stunned Wyoming town.
One of the past decade’s most performed American plays, and also adapted into a 2002 HBO movie, The Laramie Project is a heart-rending theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink as well as the heights of compassion of which we are capable. See the timeless piece at the Shoreline Community College Theater.

Shoreline alumni, Masayoshi Ishikawa, will present his original composition Suite for the Forgotten, a Jazz Orchestra Suite with strings. This is a highly personal piece written in commemoration of Japan’s 2011 earthquake/tsunami & nuclear meltdown to commemorate the victims and their families, as well as to continue raising awareness of the ongoing radiation issues in Fukushima prefecture.
Originally from Fukushima Japan, Masayoshi Ishikawa grew up in a city called Aizu Wakamatsu. He came to the United States in 2003 to begin his formal musical training in Seattle Washington, where he first found his passion for piano and the art of jazz.
We are honored to have Masa return to the Shoreline Music Department as our special guest so he can share his journey of becoming a successful pianist, arranger, and composer with our music students.

20th annual Shoreline Math Olympiad: PUB, Gym, & various locations across campus

If you plan to be on campus on Sat., March 10, take note that 750+ elementary and middle school mathletes, plus teachers and parents, will also be on campus for Shoreline Math Olympiad scheduled from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Set up begins at 6 am.
The competition is for 4-8th-grade students attending public and private schools in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Students test in the morning and enjoy entertainment and awards in the gym starting at 12:30 p.m. Sponsored by Shoreline School District, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation, Shoreline Community College, and local businesses.
This event is open to the public. Feel free to stop by and join us for our entertainment and awards ceremony!
Be sure to leave extra time for parking and note that some facilities (PUB, gym, and #1100, 1500, #1700, #1800 classrooms) will be occupied during the event.

Matika Wilbur’s most recent endeavor, Project 562, has brought her to over 400 tribal nations dispersed throughout 45 U.S. states. In her travels, she has taken thousands of portraits and collected hundreds of contemporary narratives from the breadth of Indian Country all in the pursuit of one goal: To Change The Way We See Native America.
