A Critical Comparison Of The United States and South Africa: PUB 9208

South Africa lies at the southern-most point of the African continent and borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Dr. Johnson will lead a four-week Study Abroad program in the summer of 2018 as part of a comparative analysis of movements towards multicultural societies in the United States and South Africa.

Our campus community is invited to participate in this training that explores gender identities in addition to the language and framework used to critically understand levels of oppression that impact transgender and gender non-conforming people. This training will be facilitated by Ebo Barton who is the Program Manager of Ingersoll Gender Center.
Ingersoll Gender Center is an organization of, by, and for transgender and gender diverse people that provides mutual support through peer-led support groups, advocacy in navigating resources, community organizing, and education — all in the pursuit of collective self-determination.
Jazz Ensemble Concert: Jazz Pathways: Nathan Hale High School

Jazz Pathways is a collaborative concert featuring performances by Jane Addams Middle School Jazz Band, Nathan Hall High School Jazz Band, and Shoreline Community College Jazz Ensemble. The concert will commence at 7:00 p.m. in the Performance Arts Center at Nathan Hale High School, 10750 30th Ave. N.E., Seattle, WA. 98125. Each group will have 30 minutes stage time. There will be a short intermission after Jane Addams Middle School Jazz Band and Nathan Hale’s performance. Shoreline Community College’s Jazz Ensemble will close the concert.
The Laramie Project Performance: Campus Main Theater (1600 Bldg)

The tragic story of Matthew Shepard made national headlines in 1998. This 21-year-old gay college student was beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming. Two men were arrested and charged with kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and attempted first-degree murder for the hate crime. One month later, emotions still raw, director Moisés Kaufman and his team began conducting hundreds of interviews with the people of Laramie. From those interviews came The Laramie Project, a brutally honest and thought-provoking “live documentary” about an outraged nation and a stunned Wyoming town.
One of the past decade’s most performed American plays, and also adapted into a 2002 HBO movie, The Laramie Project is a heart-rending theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink as well as the heights of compassion of which we are capable. See the timeless piece at the Shoreline Community College Theater.

Guest Speaker/Pianist: Masa Ishikawa: Music Bldg, Room 818
Fri., March 9: 12:30-2pm
Shoreline alumni, Masayoshi Ishikawa, will present his original composition Suite for the Forgotten, a Jazz Orchestra Suite with strings. This is a highly personal piece written in commemoration of Japan’s 2011 earthquake/tsunami & nuclear meltdown to commemorate the victims and their families, as well as to continue raising awareness of the ongoing radiation issues in Fukushima prefecture.
Originally from Fukushima Japan, Masayoshi Ishikawa grew up in a city called Aizu Wakamatsu. He came to the United States in 2003 to begin his formal musical training in Seattle Washington, where he first found his passion for piano and the art of jazz.
We are honored to have Masa return to the Shoreline Music Department as our special guest so he can share his journey of becoming a successful pianist, arranger, and composer with our music students.

20th annual Shoreline Math Olympiad: PUB, Gym, & various locations across campus

If you plan to be on campus on Sat., March 10, take note that 750+ elementary and middle school mathletes, plus teachers and parents, will also be on campus for Shoreline Math Olympiad scheduled from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Set up begins at 6 am.
The competition is for 4-8th-grade students attending public and private schools in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Students test in the morning and enjoy entertainment and awards in the gym starting at 12:30 p.m. Sponsored by Shoreline School District, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation, Shoreline Community College, and local businesses.
This event is open to the public. Feel free to stop by and join us for our entertainment and awards ceremony!
Be sure to leave extra time for parking and note that some facilities (PUB, gym, and #1100, 1500, #1700, #1800 classrooms) will be occupied during the event.

Matika Wilbur’s most recent endeavor, Project 562, has brought her to over 400 tribal nations dispersed throughout 45 U.S. states. In her travels, she has taken thousands of portraits and collected hundreds of contemporary narratives from the breadth of Indian Country all in the pursuit of one goal: To Change The Way We See Native America.

“From the Ashes” Panel Discussion: Room 2201

The Tragedy of North Korea: PUB 9208

North Korea’s continued development of nuclear weapons, along with the tragic death of an American student who arrived in Pyongyang fit and left in a mysterious coma, is likely to dim further prospects of improved relations between North Korea and the U.S. What can be done to improve the situation? Is a military confrontation on the horizon? Come hear speaker Clark Sorenson, Professor of International Studies at Jackson School of International Studies, lend expert opinion on the matter.

Filmmakers from across Washington have submitted their “short short” films and you’re invited to see the best of the best during the 2018 Shoreline Short Short Film Festival in the state-of-the-art Shoreline Community College Theater. Doors open at 6pm for drinks, snacks, and schmoozing.
The evening will showcase a juried selection of 3- to 10-minute films made by emerging and developing filmmakers working in our community. The top filmmakers will be honored with impressive Golden Sasquatch statues and other prizes, and you can vote for your favorite filmmaker to win the Viewer’s Choice Award! Other categories include Best in Show, Best Comedy, and Best Student Film.
Tickets are $20, parking is free, and popcorn, candy, soda, wine, and beer will be available for purchase. Don’t miss your opportunity to support up-and-coming filmmakers during this fun community event!

The Middle East has been a hotspot for decades, full of seemingly intractable problems and frustration for every U.S. Administration since World War II. Recently, U.S. President Trump announced the intention to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Will this further inflame the conflict, especially between Israelis and Palestinians? Speaker Dr. Joel Migdal, who just returned from two years living and working in the Middle East, will give his take.

Shoreline Community College’s intramurals program is working with the City of Shoreline to cement an agreement that allows Shoreline students to receive free entry to the City of Shoreline’s pool.

Leah Gerrard has worked with metal for twenty years. Her passion for wire was sparked by a jewelry class in Italy, and led her to explore sculpture at Linfield College.
Inspired by a fellow student’s intricate beaded wire baskets, Leah started weaving her own. After making a few beaded baskets, she found that it was the simple skeletal structure of wire that interested her. Self-taught, she experimented with various wires and different weaving techniques.
