Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal will hold a Town Hall meeting in the PUB Main Dining Room from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tues., April 18. This is an event that is open to the public, so please be aware that we will have an increased number of visitors to campus on that evening and that parking may become stressed beginning in the late afternoon.
Jayapal will discuss her work in Congress and take questions from constituents.

Art & Activism, PUB 9208: Thurs., April 13 – 9:30-11 a.m.
Mintwab Zemeadim is an Ethiopian artist living in Seattle. Using photography, filmmaking, and collage as mediums, her art serves as a platform for her to celebrate, challenge reality, and transcend the concept of time and space. Sankofa (to go back and get it), an Akan term coined in Ghana, is a theme explored in her visuals. It is exemplified in the creation of alternative universes and the use of the past to inform the future. Preserving her culture is essential to her art, which is rooted in her identity as a Black/African/Ethiopian woman.
In this hands-on workshop, Zemeadim will explore her work and artistic process. Participants will have the opportunity to engage their imagination and create their own collages.

Join us for the Spring Back-to-School Kick-Off event this Thurs., April 13 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the PUB Main Dining Room! Clubs and programs will host tables with information about great activities and clubs around campus as well as campus resources. This event is a great opportunity for students to discover groups they’d like to get involved with across campus.

Join Student Life for the “From Margin to Center” program series with this training that will provide strategies to intervene in hostile/violent contexts. Wed., April 12 1:30-3 p.m. in the PUB 9208.
Tolu Taiwo and Luke Ruiz bring this training to talk about ways to be active bystanders while considering positionality and identities. This training prepares each member of the Shoreline Community College community to be active bystanders and look out for one another in order to create a safer community for all. We care about our friends – this presentation provides an overview of warning signs and skills for response when they are at risk.
Tolu Taiwo and Luke Ruiz both work at Pacific Lutheran University. Tolu serves as the Prevention and Outreach Coordinator for the Center for Gender Equity at Pacific Lutheran University, has served in an array of roles advocating for those in marginalized communities, and was recently selected as a faculty member at NASPA’s Dungy Leadership Institute. Luke Ruiz is a Resident Director for two upper division residential communities and his work crosses over with a number of offices, especially the Center for Gender Equity, where he has been involved in Active Bystander Training for the past couple of years and strongly believes in speaking up and out against injustices in our society.

Join us for “Turning points in life for a young professional,” a talk by Stephen Murphy on Wed., April 12 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the PUB 9208.
University of Washington grad (1966), Stephen Murphy traveled east to Harvard Business School, where he faced his first turning point. Next, he struggled through Vietnam and Pacific typhoons, eventually finding his way to Columbia Business School and onward to Brazil. Later, he lands positions in both Bush administrations. In between, and since, he has had a successful career as an advisor to businesses on both sides of the U.S./Latin American border(s). To find out more about Steve’s “turning points of life,” on many roads both familiar and less traveled, join us. This is a frank and personal discussion of success, failure, and lessons learned by a Seattle boy who became a global wanderer.

United Way of King County will be hosting a free, one-day tax event at Shoreline Community College for students, faculty, and staff! Wed., April 12 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Workforce Computer Lab (FOSS Building, 5101).

If you make less than $64,000, United Way of King County will help you prepare and file your taxes for free. Our free tax experts will help you get all the credits you qualify for and file your return electronically, so you’ll get your refund fast.
What to bring:
- Social Security Card/ITIN letters for everyone on the return (required)
- All tax statements, such as W-2 form, 1099 form, SSA-1099 form, etc. (required)
- Health insurance forms: 1095-A (required), 1095-B (required if available), or 1095-C (required if available)
- Bank account number and routing number (recommended)
- A copy of last year’s return (recommended)
Limitations:
- We cannot help if clients have sold stock of capital gains or losses.
- We cannot help if clients have rental income.
- We cannot help if clients have F1 visa (international students).
- We cannot help those who want to dispute or contest an IRS letter or finding.
- We cannot prepare partnership, S or C corporation tax returns.
- We cannot prepare state returns.
- We cannot help with Washington B&O tax.
