Over the summer the 4102 Student Computer Lab got new chairs, a new scanner and new general study desks!
The lab received 100 new computer chairs for better comfort on those long study days! Another improvement is that we’ve added a new multi-page “Snap Scan” scanner that scans paper directly to PDF. Lastly, thanks to the reorganizing of the library this summer, we inherited some study stations and small tables with chairs downstairs. These are located in the long hallway outside the 4102 “quiet study” computer lab.
Come check it out for yourself! And for more information on the updates to the computer lab, click here.

More refillable water stations have made their way to Shoreline’s campus. A couple of weeks ago, stations arrived in the FOSS, 1800, 3000 and 2700 buildings. Now there are two more stations up and operational – one each in the lower and middle floors of the PUB (9000 bldg). Two additional units are slated to arrive later in the summer: they will be located on the lower floor of the 2900 building and on the main floor of the Library.
These refillable water stations are FREE and designed to work with sport bottles.
Why the investment in refillable water stations, and why should you use them? According to banthebottle.net:
- Making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. And that’s not even including the oil used for transportation.
- The energy we waste using bottled water would be enough to power 190,000 homes.
- Last year, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles, but only recycled 38.
- Americans used about 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. However, the U.S.’s recycling rate for plastic is only 23 percent, which means 38 billion water bottles – more than $1 billion worth of plastic – are wasted each year.
- The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 per year; that same amount of bottled water is about $1,400.
- Antimony, which is found in PET plastic bottles, in small doses can cause dizziness and depression; in larger doses it can cause nausea, vomiting and death.

Wed., July 22 is the last day students can purchase ORCA transit cards at a discount through Shoreline. If you still haven’t gotten yours this quarter, head to the Cashier’s Office windows on the second floor of the FOSS (5000) building. Bring payment, photo ID and proof of registration for summer quarter. ORCA cards for fall quarter will go on sale at the start of the quarter.
ORCA cards, the regional transit pass, are available to most students at Shoreline Community College. Shoreline’s ORCA card program is simple:
- For $125, a registered student can buy a $200 ORCA ePurse card.
- The student receives an ORCA card that is immediately usable for as long as there is still money on it.
- The $75 difference is covered by a subsidy funded by the SCOF fee.
An ORCA card is the equivalent of having cash that can be used on all Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro Transit, Kitsap Transit, Pierce Transit, Sound Transit and Washington State Ferries.
For more information, you can read about our ORCA program here.
