New refillable and FREE to use water stations have made their way to Shoreline’s campus! Brought to you by Shoreline’s Sustainability committee, these refillable water stations are designed to work with sport bottles and are now functional and operating in the FOSS, 1800, 3000 and 2700 buildings. More are still to come in the PUB and a few other locations around campus, so look to see those (and benefit from them) later this summer.

Why the investment in refillable water stations, and why should you use them? According to banthebottle.net:

  • Making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. And that’s not even including the oil used for transportation.
  • The energy we waste using bottled water would be enough to power 190,000 homes.
  • Last year, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles, but only recycled 38.
  • Americans used about 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. However, the U.S.’s recycling rate for plastic is only 23 percent, which means 38 billion water bottles – more than $1 billion worth of plastic – are wasted each year.
  • The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 per year; that same amount of bottled water is about $1,400.
  • Antimony, which is found in PET plastic bottles, in small doses can cause dizziness and depression; in larger doses it can cause nausea, vomiting and death.

So do yourself, your wallet and the environment a favor, and trade in those plastic bottles for a reusable bottle and swing by one of our new filling stations today!

job-seekers-roundtable
Join us Thurs., July 9 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the ground floor level of FOSS (5000 bldg.) for this week’s Job Seekers’ Roundtable on how to correctly format your resume.

Nobody can ever underestimate how important it is to have a good resume. First impressions count, and the first impression that a potential employer will have of you is going to depend on how you present your resume. This is going to be your one and only chance to capture a potential employer’s attention, or for your resume to be tossed into the file of those they don’t want to pursue. And this is where resume formatting becomes exceptionally important.

So what makes a well-formatted resume stand out? In a nutshell, not so much the minutia of every job you’ve held over the past 10 or so years, but the precision and readability of your work history. Get rid of the fluff or “resume padding.” Proof for correct grammar. Make good use of white space. All these tips will be covered and more.

See you this Thursday! Please bring your resume and share some tips over iced tea and other treats compliments of Central Market.

And as always: Good Luck Out There!

job-seekers-roundtable
Join us this Thurs., June 25 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Workforce Education Center on the ground floor of FOSS (5000 building) for a FREE talk on cover letters.

When you find a job you’d like to apply for, how do you approach writing your cover letter? If you’re like most people, it’s with a groan of apprehension rather than a skip and hop of elation. But you don’t have to be a wordsmith to write a great cover letter, you just need to understand what motives the employer has in hiring for the position.

Please join us as we discuss, show off and strategize our cover letters. (Bring your best letter!) Professional editor, Mary Keils, will be on hand to offer her expertise. We’ll of course have coffee and treats available, compliments of Central Market. Have a friend or family member looking for work? Please bring them along!

And as always, Good Luck Out There!

job seekers roundtable
Join us this Thurs., June 18 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the ground floor of the FOSS building (5000) for this week’s Job Seekers’ Roundtable. We’ll tackle how to dress for an interview during the hotter and sometimes more casual months of summer with a workshop by Myriam Mampengu, an Employment Specialist with Goodwill of Puget Sound.

A fun one to kick off summer: When we think of job interview preparation, a common rule of thumb is to investigate the dress code of the potential workplace, and dress equal or just a notch above those doing the interviewing. However, the workplace culture of the Pacific Northwest has been described as unique from the rest of the country (especially in summer!), not only with attire, but also expression, diversity, use of office space, breaks, and employee interaction, to name just a few.

Employment Specialist, Goodwill of Puget Sound, Myriam Mampengu, will share insights on how workplaces have evolved in these areas, and what to consider on how to assimilate with younger workers. Please join us for some coffee, iced tea and discussion as we consider Pacific Northwest workplace culture.
