Dear Student,
Spring quarter is a joyous time and the annual Commencement ceremony is a Shoreline tradition we look forward to each year.
Based on input from leaders in Associated Student Government, the Arts & Entertainment Board, and the College’s Executive Team, I have made the difficult decision to shift to a Virtual Commencement Ceremony on June 20, 2020. This year’s graduates are also invited to be recognized in person at the 2021 Commencement Ceremony next June, if they desire. The spring graduation application deadline has also been adjusted to April 30 to provide students with more time to apply.
These changes were made with the health and safety of all our graduates and their guests in mind, following current public health guidance. After reviewing several proposals for this year’s ceremony, including postponing the event to fall or to next spring, we received feedback that a spring virtual ceremony with the help of a company called Marching Order would be the best path forward.
I know that not having an in-person ceremony may feel like a loss to some and we share your disappointment in not being able to carry out this special event the same way we have done for over 50 years. I recognize many students are the first in their families to graduate or are completing their high school requirements after tremendous hurdles, and all of our students have worked very hard to reach this point in their education.
Each student is deserving of a meaningful celebration to mark this milestone in their life and this year will be no different. We have an opportunity to make new traditions together this June. Please watch for additional information about Commencement in the coming weeks and if you are in your final quarter at Shoreline, remember to apply for graduation by April 30.
Stay well as you continue learning this spring term!
With care,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Please join us to celebrate, honor, and commemorate the genius of Toni Morrison (1931-2019), famed American novelist and Nobel laureate.
The goal of this event is for you to learn about Toni Morrison’s wisdom and her craft. No need to have read her work; this is intended to be an introduction.
A group of Shoreline faculty has organized a series of reflective events taking place on Tues., Nov. 12, including:
• A gallery of some of Morrison’s most powerful and moving quotes, for perusal at your own time and pace in the PUB shared common area. These will be displayed all day.
• Three faculty-led reflective sessions discussing themes emerging from Morrison’s works. These are 40-minute concurrent sessions that will occur in the PUB in rooms 9201, 9202, and 9208 from 12:30-2pm.
• Faculty-led final session and debrief in PUB 9208 from 2-2:50 pm.

The Seattle community is full of writers of all different backgrounds and styles. Some write plays and film and some are writers of books and novels, but everyone has something in common. We are all pretty excited when November rolls around. The writing community comes together and rallies around each other for NaNoWriMo because it’s a celebration of writing what you love and ignoring the inner editor inside. That’s because the one rule of NaNoWriMo is that you can’t edit or backspace while you write. You have to move forward so at the end of the month you have 50,000 words of total, unadulterated mind vomit. It’s actually a good way to work because you can see what kind of story you end up with and then you have a whole chunk of beautiful fiction to whittle down into whatever your vision needs it to be. The goal for NaNoWriMo and for November is to write 50,000 words which comes down to 1667 words per day.
The Kick-Off Party for NaNoWriMo is happening here at Shoreline College at the library (the 4000 building) on Halloween night, October 31st. Costumes are encouraged, but not mandatory and the writing happens at midnight, so it’s a late night event. There will be candy, coffee, and all manner of shenanigans. We’re starting at 10:00 p.m. and the party goes until 2:00 a.m. There will be a mug exchange because so many of us need coffee, tea, or some other beverage to keep the words flowing during November. To participate, buy a mug and wrap it and you’ll end up taking one home! See you there.
