Dear Students,
We are excited to share with you an exciting, new, one-of-a-kind study away program we are launching this spring. Join Professors DuValle Daniel, and Brook Zimmers in Alabama this March to follow a portion of the Freedom Riders Civil Rights Trail.
Learn how African Americans and their supporters in the 1950s and 60’s risked their lives and faced unimaginable odds to fight for the right to vote and to be treated as equal citizens of the U.S. Students will visit several critical sites of the U.S Civil Rights Movement including the 16th St. Baptist Church in Birmingham, the Freedom Rider Memorial in Anniston, and the National Voting Rights Museum in Selma just to name a few.
Enjoy the benefit of small group discussions, impactful experiential learning, and a chance to experience history in a new way.
The Study Away program in Alabama will be offered during Spring Break in 2024 from March 22-29. The cost is $1775 which includes a $500 allowance for airfare, $320 allowance for meals, and double occupancy accommodations. To be eligible, you must take one or more of the Winter quarter 2024 classes:
- African American Literature (ENG 247 or 247W) with Professor Daniel
- English 102
- Communicating for Social Change (CMST 203) with Profession Zimmer
Remember, there is still time to add a class for fall so if you are interested but need a prerequisite for any of these courses you can still register until October 3, 2023.
