Dear Student,
After a historic turnout, last week’s presidential electoral vote tally is coming clearer into view, with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris named the projected president and vice president elect.
Regardless of who will occupy the White House for the next four years, important work remains for our nation to push toward a greater sense of justice and equality for everyone in our society, especially those who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). For many of us, this is not the end of the process, but rather the beginning.
As the late Representative John Lewis stated shortly before his death, “Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself.”
Lewis reminds us that whether we voted or not, or whether our candidate won or lost, we each play a role in actively upholding our democratic values and practices in this country. Here at Shoreline Community College, we will continue our work, steadfast in our commitment to equity and inclusion. I look forward to continuing this work with you.
Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
