Press Release

(Shoreline, Wash., May 30, 2023)– Shoreline Community College (Shoreline)

For Shoreline Community College (SCC), the word community isn’t just part of the College’s name, it’s a passion. Last month on April 29, 2023, three Shoreline automotive students and Amber Avery-Graff, Tenure-Track Automotive Instructor, worked together alongside members of SCC’s Security Team and the Shoreline Police Department at the Catalytic Converter Marketing Event to engrave over 50 catalytic converters for the community. Last summer Shoreline staged the first event which was students only, then expanded in the fall to include SCC faculty and staff. Both were incredibly well received, which led to last month’s event which was open to all interested members within the greater Shoreline community.

Catalytic converters contain precious metals. It takes less than 90 seconds for thieves to roll under a vehicle, cut the pipes on either side, and leave with the converter. “A catalytic converter is typically over one thousand dollars to replace, so that’s a huge expense,” says Avery-Graff. By engraving the last eight digits of a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) onto the converter, it can be traced back to its original vehicle which makes it much more difficult to sell.

For the event, community members pre-registered and were greeted by Gregory Cranson, Acting Director of Safety and Security at SCC, members of Shoreline’s Security Team, and members of the Shoreline Police Department. From there Shoreline automotive students Trevor Buehler, Christian Mariano, and Felipe Tores along with Avery-Graff worked together to take the cars back to the automotive building and spray paint each converter with bright paint, so that even at night it is obvious to anyone who sees it that the converter has been marked. This process acts as a deterrent to help keep the catalytic converter from being stolen and can also be a way for police to locate victims of this type of theft so they can press charges.

Like a well-oiled machine, Avery-Graff and her students were able to move each car through the process in roughly ten minutes. “Students are in school 4 days a week 8 hours a day, so for students to come in and volunteer their time on a day off is pretty amazing,” says Avery-Graff.

The community response to the event was extremely enthusiastic, with many members already voicing their excitement for the next event, eager to encourage their neighbors and spouses to attend. President of Shoreline Community College, Dr. Jack Kahn had this to say about the event. “Shoreline Community College is extremely pleased to work directly with the city on projects that will benefit our community. Chief Park and her team have been extremely collaborative, and we are so excited that this event had such a positive impact and look forward to many other events with the city.”

Dear Campus Community,

Our vendor had to reschedule their work to tomorrow. So, tomorrow, Friday 5/26, the Bldg. 2900 Parking Lot will need to be closed tomorrow for resurfacing as a part of the work being completed to improve campus accessibility. The parking lot and paved parking along the roadway will both be closed off to allow for the work and the large equipment. The college anticipates that the lot will be open by Tuesday, 5/30. We apologize for the late notice and will strive to ensure more advanced notice whenever possible.

Please contact Acting Director of Safety & Security Greg Cranson at gcranson@shoreline.edu if you have any questions.

Dear Campus Community,

This morning, just after 8:00am, a fire broke out in Building 2600. One staff member was in the building and safely evacuated after their initial attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful. Our staff member immediately contacted Campus Security and 911, who had previously been notified via our campus fire alarm system.

Campus Security and members of the Facilities department began to set up a perimeter as Shoreline Fire and neighboring partner agencies arrived on scene to begin firefighting operations. The buildings immediately surrounding the fire (2700, 2800, 2900, and the HSAAMCC construction site) were evacuated out of an abundance of caution, to limit exposure to smoke/fumes and in the event the fire jumped structures.

The fire is fully extinguished, and the Shoreline Fire Marshal’s Office and King County Sheriff Fire Investigation Unit have completed their investigations. Director of Safety and Security Greg Cranson will reach out to stakeholders about reentry and salvage.

Personnel from Campus Security, Facilities, and the employee that was present when the fire broke out were all assessed by Shoreline Fire medical personnel for smoke inhalation and thankfully, none required treatment.

Classes and college business will resume in the surrounding buildings (2700, 2800, 2900, HSAAMCC site) on Wednesday, 05/24/2023. Due to damage from this incident, Building 2600 will now remain unoccupied and unused until its preplanned demolition this fall to make way for the new STEAM building.  The college has identified space for classes and labs typically held in Building 2600, and those updates have been passed to instructors and students. Due to the incident, the 2200, 2700, and 2800 buildings have no HVAC. We are working with Puget Sound Energy on a timeline for restoration.

The college is incredibly grateful for the work done by Shoreline Fire and their partner agencies who responded quickly to fight fire. While the loss of equipment and space is unfortunate, material items can be replaced. We are thankful that nobody was injured during the fire.

The college will hold a debrief to determine what went well and identify the areas where we can improve, as the pursuit of providing a safe and secure campus is always our first priority.

Greg Cranson
Acting Director of Safety & Security

Press Release

(Shoreline, Wash., May 23, 2023) Shoreline Community College (Shoreline)

This summer Major League Baseball’s Midsummer Classic All-Star Game returns to the Emerald City.  This is the third time in franchise history that the Mariners will be hosting. Yesterday Major League Baseball, the Seattle Mariners, and the Mariners Care Foundation announced this year’s recipients of the All-Star Legacy Initiative. Aimed at having a long-term impact on the Greater Seattle community, this initiative seeks to address equity gaps in order to expand access to youth baseball and softball, as well as support the needs of underserved community college students to help them complete their college program.

Shoreline Community College (SCC) was chosen as a recipient to receive funding through the All-Star Legacy partnership providing aid to local community college students through United Way of King County’s “Bridge to Finish” program. This program offers aid to thousands of students through the Benefits Hub/Food Pantry, providing them with emergency aid funding, meals, transportation and/or housing assistance, all in service of removing barriers to continuing education and degree attainment.

“The environment is becoming more and more challenging for our students in terms of their cost of living and access to needed resources to be successful as a college student. This area in particular being so close to the city shares some of the same kind of challenges that people see in traditional city environments,” said Dr. Jack Kahn, President of SCC.

Shoreline Community College was one of the first sites to pilot United Way of King County’s “Bridge to Finish” Benefits Hub/Food Pantry model when it was launched in the 2017/18 school year. The program has now grown to include ten community colleges in total. Last year SCC served 453 students through this program and provided 4, 162 interventions both through coaching and tangible goods. According to program statistics 76% of aid recipients in the “Bridge to Finish” program identify as students of color and 42% are parents. President Kahn said, “In terms of our dedication to our DEAI work we need to recognize the needs of our diverse communities and bring as many resources as possible and access points for our students.  We are so grateful for this project in moving us in that direction!”

The Legacy investment will provide funding for a Benefits Hub refurbishment at Shoreline Community College.  This will include new appliances in the food pantry as well as a complete restock of healthy food options, a new garment store layout for clothing, a dorm essentials station with bedding, a living essentials station providing items like utensils, dishes, and handheld kitchen tools, as well as a personal essentials area complete with basic toiletries for students. “The Shoreline’s Benefits Hub is honored to be chosen as the MLB/Mariners Legacy Project. In addition, to our existing food pantry we are excited for students to engage in a shopping experience to access the new hygiene pantry in the redesigned space. Staff are looking forward to a more functional space to better support students.” says Savena Garrett, Director of Student Services at SCC.

“We are looking forward to making important contribution to the Seattle community together with the Mariners.” said April Brown, Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility, Major League baseball. “As a significant part of MLB All-Star Week, this initiative will celebrate these impactful projects and our local partners on one of Baseball’s grandest stages.”
