*A Sequel Report on the summer 2015 Study Abroad Experience
This past summer, a group of students, led by Professor Ernest Johnson, experienced a 4-week summer program in Cape Town where they examined the social and cultural history of South Africa, and explored current efforts to create a democratic, multicultural nation.
During this session, the students will report on what they felt and what they heard from the people they met. They participated in many social events and historical lectures, including school visits, lectures by community leaders, and home-stays inside “Black” townships and homelands.

The Edmonds SnoKing Branch of the American Association of University Women now partners with Shoreline and Edmonds Community Colleges. Members next meet at 10 a.m., Feb. 13 in Room 2925 at the Shoreline Community College campus for a talk by Shoreline faculty Rachel David, “How Does Gender Affect the Conditions of Our Lives.” Guests are welcome. Monday, Feb. 8
College Rep visit: Eastern Washington University, Table in PUB Lobby 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
College representatives will be at Shoreline’s campus to meet with interested students. Reps will discuss topics such as academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures for their college. They can answer other questions students may have too.

Queer Film Festival Presents: GOD LOVES UGANDA, PUB 9208 12:30-2:30 p.m.
The feature-length documentary God Loves Uganda is a powerful exploration of the evangelical campaign to change African culture with values imported from America’s Christian Right. he film follows American and Ugandan religious leaders fighting “sexual immorality” and missionaries trying to convince Ugandans to follow Biblical law.

Come Join Art Club in Figure Drawing!
Art Club is hosting free figure drawing sessions every Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. during the month of February. We will be in the Visual Arts building in room 2068.
If you like to draw, or need some extra figure drawing practice, or you just want to try something new, this is the place for you! Bring your sketchbooks, drawing pads, pencils, charcoal, pens, and your love for drawing and learning. This is a great way to meet other artists, cultivate your craft, or just add to your portfolio.

Each year a new book is selected for our Community Book Read. Together we share our impressions and ideas. Weekly analyses of the text are led by a variety of college volunteers, bringing with them their unique backgrounds, expertise and perspectives. This keeps the discussion fresh, lively and relevant.
This year’s book is Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements. Octavia’s Brood is a collection of social justice-themed science fiction stories that feature things like time travel, shape shifting, dystopian worlds, re-imaginings of “model minorities” and the possibilities of using visionary fiction to develop new ideas of future worlds. The works are inspired by the writings of Octavia Butler, an award-winning science fiction writer (Kindred, Parable of the Sower, and Lilith’s Brood) who lived in Lake Forest Park before her death in 2006.
The entire campus community is invited to read and discuss the stories inside Octavia’s Brood during winter quarter. Students will be able to receive a FREE copy of the book after signing up!

Shoreline’s 2nd annual Queer Film Festival kicks off Mon., Feb. 1 with a screening of KUMU HINA, “a uniquely Hawaiian love story.” The film shows at 12:30 p.m. in the PUB 9208.
KUMU HINA is a powerful film about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values within the Westernized society of modern day Hawaii. It is told through the lens of an extraordinary Native Hawaiian who is both a proud and confident māhū, or transgender woman, and an honored and respected kumu, or teacher, cultural practitioner, and community leader.
