Shoreline Community College Fastpitch team is having winter pitching and catching clinics on campus. We will be working on the beginning/intermediate fundamentals of pitching and catching with an emphasis on the mental approach to the game. Location will be room 3014 (lower level of gym). Participants bring your own catching gear, glove, water and tennis shoes. Ages 8-14 years old. Cost is $39.00 for each 1 hour session. Our Chinese scholar, Fei Ke, will unlock the logic puzzle that forms Chinese characters, and illustrate their unique shapes and composition. You will learn the art of calligraphy and how to “draw” these characters with success. This workshop is good for all ages!

What to do when you encounter a stumper? Rebecca Demarest offers helpful tips for tackling creative problems – and not just writers’ block! Rebecca is an award-winning author, book designer, coach, and writing instructor practiced at working with adults and kids, including in a homeschool environment. Her primary areas of expertise revolves around speculative fiction, with practice in theater, historical fiction, mystery writing, and game writing. She enjoys individual coaching, manuscript evaluation, and teaching workshops and classes for a wide range of topics for adults and kids and has worked as an instructor and course designer with organizations such as the Bureau of Fearless Ideas in Seattle, Clarion West, DigiPen, and the Museum of Popular Culture. Date: 11-21-2023 Time: 3-4pm Location: Room 4202 (the library)

Learn to use brush calligraphy lettering combined with holiday themes and flourishes to create beautiful cards, table place cards, and gifts. Looking for something fun to do on Saturday? We have just the thing!

Our Chinese Scholar, Fei Ke, from Sichuan, known as the home of pandas, will take you on a virtual tour to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Knowledge of pandas will be introduced and a fun quiz will follow to add interest. The winner of panda knowledge quiz will get a panda toy gift brought from China. The highlight of the workshop is panda crafting – to create your own 3D Panda origami with supplies and instructions provided. This workshop is good for students aged 13+ and adults of all ages! Age 8-12 students can attend with an adult.

Date: Saturday, October 21, 2023

Time: 10:00am-12:00pm

Location: Bldg. 1500 Rm 1522

Price: Free for Shoreline students and employees, $5 for community members.

Cascade Music & Drama is excited to introduce small-group piano lessons for youth and adults at Shoreline Community College this fall. Learn and grow with one of the area’s most sought-after instructors, Dr. Jensina Oliver. Sessions cover rhythm, movement, notation, singing, and early keyboard/piano training. Acoustic piano or digital keyboard with weighted keys required for practice at home. Lessons take place in the keyboard lab in the #800 Music Building on campus.  Known for her expressive and passionate performances, pianist Jensina Oliver has delighted audiences as soloist and chamber musician in the United States, China, Canada, Costa Rica, Israel, and throughout Europe. Her performances with orchestra include appearances with the Hubei Provincial Orchestra of Wuhan, China, and the Utah Philharmonia. She was a national finalist of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition, a resident artist at the Banff Chamber Music Festival, and has won several solo and concerto competitions throughout the United States.

Dr. Oliver is in high demand as guest clinician and adjudicator at events, conferences, and competitions throughout the Pacific Northwest. She has taught at Shoreline Community College since 1998 and has a thriving piano studio with students of all ages. Ms. Oliver currently resides with her family in Shoreline, WA, where she loves to enjoy all of the beautiful outdoor opportunities that the Pacific Northwest provides.
