Dear Campus Community,
This morning, just after 8:00am, a fire broke out in Building 2600. One staff member was in the building and safely evacuated after their initial attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful. Our staff member immediately contacted Campus Security and 911, who had previously been notified via our campus fire alarm system.
Campus Security and members of the Facilities department began to set up a perimeter as Shoreline Fire and neighboring partner agencies arrived on scene to begin firefighting operations. The buildings immediately surrounding the fire (2700, 2800, 2900, and the HSAAMCC construction site) were evacuated out of an abundance of caution, to limit exposure to smoke/fumes and in the event the fire jumped structures.
The fire is fully extinguished, and the Shoreline Fire Marshal’s Office and King County Sheriff Fire Investigation Unit have completed their investigations. Director of Safety and Security Greg Cranson will reach out to stakeholders about reentry and salvage.
Personnel from Campus Security, Facilities, and the employee that was present when the fire broke out were all assessed by Shoreline Fire medical personnel for smoke inhalation and thankfully, none required treatment.
Classes and college business will resume in the surrounding buildings (2700, 2800, 2900, HSAAMCC site) on Wednesday, 05/24/2023. Due to damage from this incident, Building 2600 will now remain unoccupied and unused until its preplanned demolition this fall to make way for the new STEAM building. The college has identified space for classes and labs typically held in Building 2600, and those updates have been passed to instructors and students. Due to the incident, the 2200, 2700, and 2800 buildings have no HVAC. We are working with Puget Sound Energy on a timeline for restoration.
The college is incredibly grateful for the work done by Shoreline Fire and their partner agencies who responded quickly to fight fire. While the loss of equipment and space is unfortunate, material items can be replaced. We are thankful that nobody was injured during the fire.
The college will hold a debrief to determine what went well and identify the areas where we can improve, as the pursuit of providing a safe and secure campus is always our first priority.

Hello Campus Community,
We have a minor improvement project starting this week. This is an accessibility project for the 3000 building and 2900 parking lot. For this project, the contractor will be installing a ramp on the north side of the 3000 building to allow for accessibility access to the 1st floor of the 3000 building. The contractor will also be adjusting the slope for 2 accessibility parking stalls on the south side of the 2900 building parking lot. This project has been divided into two phases. The first phase will be the ramp which will generate noise on campus while they break up concrete. The NE stairwell for 3000 will have intermittent accessibility as they break up the concrete and replace. There will be access on the NW side of 3000 and access to the motorcycle parking on the north side of 3000. The second phase will include repaving the 2 accessibility stalls on south side of 2900. The purpose is to adjust the slope of the parking stalls and to provide a correctly sloped path from the parking stalls to the new ramp. There will be intermittent impacts to the 2900 parking lot. More communication will be sent once I receive the schedule and impacts to the 3000 and 2900.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Kim Clark

Campus Community,
Last night, the college was made aware of a mandatory compliance test that is going to take place today, May 11th in Building 1600. Today from 2:00PM-3:30PM, the Bldg. 1600 fire alarm will be activated for short periods as the Fire Marshal’s Office conducts a final review of our new Bldg. 1600 fire system. Unfortunately, the timing of this test cannot be changed. I apologize for the distraction that this will cause the programs surrounding Bldg. 1600. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at gcranson@shoreline.edu
Respectfully,

UPDATE: 1:38pm The water has been restored and bathrooms have been opened.
Attention Campus Community,
We’ve been notified that a water line has been cut due to construction for HSAMCC. The contractor, Forma, is working to locate parts and fix the water line today. The following buildings have been impacted, 2600, 2700, 2800, and 2900. These buildings have no access to running water at the sinks or bathrooms. Maintenance is working to put up signage at the bathrooms to direct people to other locations.
Thank you,
Kim Clark

Dear Campus Community,
Beginning Wednesday, May 3rd, there will be work on the Verizon tower located west of Bldg. 1600. For the first portion of the work, it will be contained within the tower fencing area with little to no impact to campus. Beginning Monday May 15th through Friday May 19th, the area on the map highlighted in red will be coned off as various lifts and a crane are brought in for the last leg of the work.
The loudest impact to campus will be the diesel engines of the crane and rigs that are used to work at height on the tower. The vast majority of work being conducted will be with hand tools so there should be minimal audible disruptions.

Chris Ward and Zach Peeples showing off our new uniforms
Dear Campus Community,
We are pleased to announce that over the month of April, you will see Campus Security looking a little different. Changes are being made to our uniform shirt, jacket, and shoulder patch. A big thank you to Zach Peeples and Chris Ward for being willing to show them off today!
The new uniform shirts are a high-visibility yellow/green with reflective bands around the arms. The brighter colors will make Camus Security more noticeable which will increase uniformed personnel safety, especially during inclement weather and during darker times of the day.

Additionally, the vast majority of law enforcement in our area wear dark colored uniforms; the color difference should make our uniformed personnel more recognizable as non-law enforcement without having to read a patch. In looking a little less like law enforcement:
- our uniformed personnel look more approachable for those who may be uncomfortable around law enforcement
- we further reduce the chance of injury to our officers if someone is looking to harm law enforcement
- everyone is reminded that while enforcement and security is our primary objective, the vast majority of our interactions on campus are to better serve our community
The new uniform jackets are also a high-visibility yellow/green with reflective bands on multiple areas of the jacket. The new uniform jackets will also be the same color as the shirt and will be covered in reflective bands on multiple areas of the jacket. The newly updated color combined with the addition of multiple reflective bands will also create better visibility in the wetter months when jackets are frequently worn. Our jacket selection is also being implemented by a local transit security agency, and another local higher education institution for their non-law enforcement personnel, which will hopefully only increase the brand recognition that our uniformed Campus Security personnel are not law enforcement.
The final change we have made is to the patches worn on the shoulders of our uniforms. Our previous version was a replica of the Washington State Patrol patch, only with a different color scheme and ‘Shoreline Community College’ in place of ‘Washington State Patrol’. The new patch is designed to be another tool in identifying our personnel as security with ‘CAMPUS SECURITY’ embroidered in a yellow similar to the college yellow. The background of the patch better aligns with the college brand colors, and the Shoreline Community College logo has been added as well. The goal of this change is to reinforce the fact that while our uniformed personnel may not be directly involved in the instructional purpose of the college, we are a part of the college and exist to support the campus as a whole.
As the new uniforms arrive, you will slowly see the changeover from the current dark blue shirts and jackets with the older shoulder patch to our new, brighter and more college aligned uniforms. However, please remember, our purpose remains the same, to keep all of you safe and secure so that you can focus on learning and growing as a community.

Good afternoon,
First of all, we want to say a huge congratulations to the graduates of our Nursing Program. Yesterday we graduated the largest class ever, with forty new nurses proudly walking across the stage!
Wi-Fi Hotspots
In other news, we have deployed Wi-Fi hotspots throughout campus and are working to make them as effective as possible. We hope to have a map showing their locations around campus early next week.
Cybersecurity Practices
We have received several questions about best practices for general cybersecurity. Here are a few recommendations to consider:
- Remember to stay vigilant against suspicious communications. If you receive an email, textor phone call from a sender you do not recognize, do not respond, open the messageor download attachments. Only click on links or attachments from emails you trust. If you think you have received a suspicious communication, please reach out to your instructor so that Technology Support Services may assistyou.
- Always use strong passwords. Strong passwords typically include a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Don’trepeat or use the same passwords across accounts.
- It is always advisable to regularly review and monitor your accounts. If you notice any unusual activity, it is recommended that you contact that account institution immediately.
Parking
Due to our ongoing system outage, our parking pass distribution has been delayed. Students will not be required to display a parking pass until April 17, 2023.
Enjoy your weekend!
