Message from President Roberts: Preparing for the 2020 Presidential Election

Dear Student,

Most of us are keenly aware that we are just two weeks away from a national election on Tuesday, November 3rd that feels very consequential. People across the nation, from all walks of life, are passionate about the political direction of our democracy and are filled with many emotions, particularly as we continue to navigate a global pandemic, deep economic uncertainty, and the truths of racial injustice.

While each of us has our own set of personal and political beliefs, we also form one community here at Shoreline Community College. We know some members of our community will feel elated that their candidate of choice is elected to serve the country, others will feel devastated that their candidate did not succeed. Yet our responsibility to care for one another and to treat each other with respect and fairness will remain.

Regardless of the results of this election, the College remains steadfastly committed to diversity and equity, and we affirm our College values of respect, inclusion, and student engagement. In the coming days and weeks, we will need to draw on our collective values and offer our compassion and support for one another, as well as for our families, neighbors, and peers.

I urge all of us to continue to keep the values of our community close at hand, and to seek out conversations that are grounded in respect, calm, and an openness to problem solving at this tender time in our nation.

Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President
